Heroes Create!

For the seven months, Robley Rex VA Medical Center’s Homeless Veterans Art Support Group cut, dyed, stitched and pieced quilts.

These quilts were a result of The Kentucky Center's Arts in Healing and it's Heroes Create! project. Heroes Create! places homeless and transitioning veterans with artists to build community and confidence through art. For the quilt project teaching artist Pat Sturtzel worked with the veterans to help them create quilts by altering white fabric.

Take a few minutes to watch the video and hear Heroes Create! members speak about the impact of this quilting project.

Reflection on this project: What an amazing project! The time, patience and vision it takes to create a quilt is admirable to say the least. The Heroes Create! team did an amazing job providing a creative outlet and community space for this group of veterans. I was brought into this project as it was wrapping up and was asked to create visuals to share across several platforms. The biggest challenge for me was having so little time with the participants. I would have loved to capture the transformation of the fabric and relate it to the change in the veterans. However, I do think the visuals are successful in communicating the results of the project.
